Getting to this point wasn’t easy

My fantasy of freedom, adventuring and playing with my children were cut short when I became a homeschooling mum.

When my son refused to go to go to school we decided to temporarily homeschool. I bought a reading curriculum, researched all I could about homeschooling and created a schedule for, what I thought would be a temporary lifestyle.

BUT that first year was really hard and I felt like every day was a failure. I was at home with my newborn, my three year old and my strong-willed five year old son who I was trying to teach.

I felt like all the pressure to educate my son and set him up for his future was on my shoulders and I was slowly failing as a teacher and as a mother.

Despite my best efforts in creating lesson plans, trying to articulate maths and use phonetics to teach him how to read, our lessons would fail, be distrupted or end in tears (either me or him!).

And then I discovered how much of my own beliefs, conditioning and knowledge about mainstream education was affecting not only the way I homeschooled but also about the way I was parenting my children.

I made a conscious choice to break free from the structure I had created that was slowly consuming me and becoming a burden for my family.

I slowly became aware of the history of education and how my conventional beliefs about learning were impacting my life. As I started to work through each and every pre-conceived idea I had about homeschooling and parenting, my relationships with my children began deepening and our learning accelerated.

I developed a new awareness about how we learn as children and as adults. And with each breakthrough I had, my life as a homeschool mum became expansive, fun and I was able to connect with my children on a level that I could only ever dream of before.
